Understanding Where It Comes From—and How to Let It Go

BOOK A CONSULTATION WITH LIZ

What Are Shame and Guilt?

They’re often used interchangeably—but they’re slightly different:

Guilt is feeling like you’ve done something wrong. Shame is feeling like you are something wrong.

Both can deeply affect how you experience your body, your desires, and your relationships.

Where These Feelings Come From

Cultural or Religious Messages

Beliefs that sex is “bad,” “dirty,” or something to hide

Upbringing & Early Experiences

Lack of open conversations or negative messaging about the body

Past
Relationships

Criticism, rejection, or being made to feel that what you like is bad or abnormal

Media & Social Expectations

Unrealistic standards about how sex “should” look or feel

Instead of feeling present, you feel

  • Guarded
  • Insecure
  • Too much
  • Not enough
  • Abnormal

Why This Matters

Tension instead of relaxation

Disconnection instead of presence

Pressure instead of enjoyment

Small Shifts That Help

  • Notice Your Inner Dialogue
Pay attention to how you speak to yourself
  • Question Old Beliefs
Ask: “Where did I learn this—and is it still true for me?”
  • Practice Self-Compassion
Treat yourself with the same understanding you’d offer someone else.
  • Allow Curiosity Instead of Judgment
Shift from “This is wrong” to “I want to understand this.”

When to Seek Support

  • Shame or guilt affects your intimacy or confidence
  • You feel disconnected from your body
  • You struggle to express your needs or desires
  • You tell yourself what you want is wrong or bad

How Sex Therapy Can Help

  • Understanding where these feelings come from
  • Reducing self-judgment and pressure
  • Rebuilding a sense of safety in your body
  • Creating a more open and accepting relationship with yourself

There’s Nothing Wrong With You

Shame can make it feel like there is.
But your thoughts, your body, and your experiences are not something to hide or fix—they’re something to understand.
And that understanding can change everything.
