Understanding Overthinking, Pressure, and How to Feel More Present

BOOK A CONSULTATION WITH LIZ

What Is Sexual Anxiety?

Sexual anxiety is when worry, pressure, or fear interferes with your ability to relax, feel present, and enjoy intimacy.

It can affect desire (less interest in sex), arousal (difficulty getting turned on), performance (difficulty maintaining or controlling your body’s physical response), and pleasure (feeling disconnected or distracted).

It’s not just mental—it affects your body too.

Why This Happens

Performance Pressure

Feeling like you need to meet certain expectations

Past
Experiences

A previous difficult or uncomfortable experience

Shame or
Guilt

Internal beliefs about sex that create discomfort

General Anxiety or Stress

Mental load from daily life affecting your body

You may notice:

  • A loss in libido
  • Overthinking during intimacy
  • Difficulty staying present
  • Feeling tense or disconnected
  • Avoiding sex or intimacy
  • Pressure to perform or “get it right”

What’s Actually Normal?

Feel nervous
in certain
situations

Be affected
by stress or
mood

Have occasional difficulty staying present

How to Reduce Anxiety Around Sex

  • Shift Focus to Experience
Move away from “doing it right” and toward what you feel or what feels good.
  • Slow Down
Give your body time to relax and respond.
  • Reduce Expectations
Let go of the idea that sex has to look a certain way.
  • Stay Present
Bring your attention back to your body when your mind drifts.

When to Seek Support

  • Anxiety keeps showing up during intimacy
  • You feel disconnected or avoidant
  • You’ve lost your desire for sex
  • Pressure or fear is affecting your experience
  • You want to feel more relaxed and confident

How Sex Therapy Can Help

  • Understanding the root of the anxiety
  • Building a solid mindfulness practice
  • Breaking the cycle of pressure and overthinking
  • Rebuilding confidence and body awareness
  • Creating a more relaxed and connected experience

You Don’t Have to Keep Overthinking

Your body knows how to respond.
It just needs the right conditions—less pressure, more safety, presence, and pleasure.
And that’s something you can build.
