Understanding Your Body, Adapting to Change, and Staying Connected

BOOK A CONSULTATION WITH LIZ

How Menopause Affects Sexuality

Menopause involves hormonal changes—especially a decrease in estrogen—that can impact both physical and emotional aspects of intimacy.

You may experience lower sexual desire, vaginal dryness or discomfort, changes in arousal or sensitivity, difficulty reaching orgasm, or feeling less connected to your body.

These changes can happen gradually or feel sudden.

Common Changes During Menopause

Lower Sexual Desire
  • Desire may feel lower or less spontaneous
  • Interest in sex may change over time
  • This can happen gradually or feel sudden
Dryness or Discomfort
  • Vaginal dryness can make intimacy uncomfortable
  • Sensitivity may change
  • Pain can make sex feel stressful
  • Comfort matters before desire can build
Arousal & Sensitivity
  • Arousal may take longer
  • Touch may feel different than before
  • Stimulation needs may change
  • Reaching orgasm may feel different
Body
Connection
  • You may feel less connected to your body
  • Mood and identity can influence desire
  • Aging can affect confidence
  • These responses are normal and manageable

Menopause is not just physical—it can affect comfort, desire, mood, and connection.

  • Hormonal shifts can affect lubrication, elasticity, comfort, and desire
  • Physical discomfort can make intimacy feel less inviting, stressful, or painful
  • Emotional changes in mood, identity, or life stage can influence how you feel about sex
  • Relationship patterns or communication issues may become more noticeable during this time

What’s Actually Normal?

Changes in
desire and arousal throughout the stages of perimenopause and menopause.

Needing more time or stimulation to feel as aroused as you did prior to hormonal changes.

Experiencing vaginal dryness or changes in how you experience touch during perimenopause or menopause.

How to Stay Connected to Your Sexuality

  • Prioritize Comfort
Address physical discomfort so your body can relax and respond. Sex should NEVER be painful. If it is, see a doctor who specializes in hormones/peri/menopause.
  • Take Your Time
Arousal may take longer—and that’s okay.
  • Focus on Connection
Emotional closeness becomes even more important.
  • Communicate Openly
Talk with your partner about what feels different and what you need.

When to Seek Support

  • Sex has become uncomfortable or stressful
  • You feel disconnected from your desire or body
  • You’re unsure how to adapt to these changes
  • It’s affecting your confidence or relationship

How Sex Therapy Can Help

  • Understanding your body’s changes
  • Reducing pressure and frustration
  • Rebuilding comfort and confidence
  • Increasing and improving communication and connection

This Is a New Chapter—
Not the End

Your sexuality doesn’t disappear with menopause.
It evolves.

With the right support, this stage can still include connection, pleasure, and confidence—just in a way that works for you now.
